Oakley combines artful design with technological innovation when it comes to any of their products… particularly when it comes to the Oakley visor. Today, athletes in over 110 different countries, especially those playing American football and hockey, choose the Oakley hockey visor or Oakley Football Helmet Visor as their brand of choice for eye protection. The Oakley visor is designed using technological breakthroughs intended for aerospace organizations and the military to reduce and eliminate distortion and to provide a crucial and almost impenetrable barrier for the eye area.

The Oakley visor is an excellent choice for American football and hockey players alike, not only for the sleek design Oakley offers, but also for the true performance of either the helmet shield or visor. Here are some facts about Oakley visors that should make it your number one choice:

Eliminates distortion found in first-generation polycarbonate visors.
Maintains critical clarity across the entire field of vision.
The POLARIS ELLIPSOID(TM) lens minimizes optical distortion at all angles.
Injection molded from impact-resistant PLUTONITE®.
Scratch and fog resistant.
Provides an almost impenetrable barrier for the eyes against on-coming objects.
Long lasting and durable.

The advantages of the Oakley visor are second to none for any American football or hockey player. When playing these sports, having a full range of vision in any environment is crucial to not only playing the game effectively, but safely as well. Because both the Oakley hockey visor and the Oakley football helmet visor are designed with such technology and safety in mind, they virtually eliminate the distortion commonly found in first-generation visors.

Additionally, the Oakley visor range is made using PLUTONITE®, which blocks 100% of all harmful blue light and UV rays. In combination with the PLUTONITE®, the pure geometry of these visors and shields contribute to the exceptional quality. Furthermore, these visors are treated with a specially formulated coating (called AFR) that provides both scratch and fog resistance to the polycarbonate visor. The AFR treatment allows for clarity and durability in any temperature condition including snow, rain, and humidity.

For decades, amateur and professional athletes have used the Oakley brand alike. Over the years the company has obtained over 540 patents that exude nothing but excellence and true originality. The Oakley brand has provided nothing but excellence in not only the Oakley visor but also in premium sunglasses, goggles, prescription eyewear, apparel, footwear and accessories since its inception. Oakley has a true commitment to excellence and rises to the challenge of defying the limits of performance and technology in the sports arena.

For any player of American football or hockey, eye safety should depend on the Oakley brand. Oakley’s dedication to true innovation, performance, and quality can be compared to no other. Each visor is made with the latest technologically advanced materials, formed with special geometry in mind, and is built to last through even the toughest conditions. Oakley visors are made to be distortion-free, scratch resistant, and fog resistant so that play can continue in any environment. There is no question that the Oakley visor should be the player’s choice.

When a hockey player or coach goes overseas for a game in another country, they need to seriously consider getting proper medical insurance before leaving on their trip. Athletes of any sport are faced with many dangers when they travel outside of their home country however; hockey players tend to be exposed to more than most because of the rough nature of the sport that they play. Falling unexpectedly ill or having an accident may result in medical services that are not properly covered by existing insurance because of territorial limitations or high deductibles. Depending on where they are traveling to, a serious illness or injury may require them to be hospitalized or air evacuated to another country where the medical services are better. Air evacuation tends to be very pricey and may easily exceed $25,000. Even if the hockey player and coaches are making a lot of money in their field, improper insurance may result in a massive financial burden.

There are several different kinds of insurance that all coaches and especially hockey players should get before they decide to hit the road and travel outside of their country. They include medical, emergency dental, emergency evacuation, emergency reunion, and repatriation of remains and of course lost checked luggage. Medical should include inpatient and outpatient hospitalization, surgery, anesthesiology, physician’s fee, dressings, diagnostic procedures, oxygen, prescription drugs and emergency local ambulance.

Emergency dental is one of those things that every hockey player should have no matter what seeing as many hockey players loose teeth in fights and on ice antics. It should include emergency dental treatment and emergency dental surgery if necessary to replace or restore teeth. Emergency evacuation is something that is also highly recommended for hockey players and coaches because it will help in the event of the host countries civil unrest or in the event of an accident. In the case of an accident, there may need to be emergency ground or air transportation to the nearest hospital.

Emergency reunion is in case of the event of an accident so that one of the injured person’s relatives can be flown in to be with them while they are in the hospital. It usually includes one round trip economy ticket to wherever the injured person is receiving treatment.

Repatriation of remains is in case of the event that a hockey player or coach dies as a result of their injury or illness so that their body is flown back to their home country. Another great thing for all hockey players and coaches to get is the lost checked luggage insurance. This is an important one because all athletes need to have their equipment with them or at least have a way of replacing it if they don’t have it. In the event of lost luggage, the insurance company will pay to have the luggage replaced or at least the equipment rented so that the game can still go on. Airlines have similar policies but many times it takes a day or two or the funds given are inadequate. When you are flying into a new country to play a game that night, you don’t have time to wait for the airline to give you a little bit of money to replace your stuff.

So whether you are a coach or a player, it is always a good idea to be prepared and have proper hockey insurance before leaving the country. You never know when it might save your life.

Interest in fantasy football is growing by leaps and bounds. If you are interested in owning a fantasy football team, one of the most important decisions you will need to make will be in regards to the type of league you should join. There are many different types of fantasy football leagues and it is important to make the right decision. Read on for tips to help you understand the different types of teams and decide which one is right for you.

The most popular type of leagues are the standard draft leagues. These types of leagues are begun with teams in which the players are selected in a serpentine style of draft. Lineups can then be selected by the owners on a weekly basis. This is usually based on the number of players per position as allowed by league rules. There are actually two different types of standard draft leagues. These are total points and head to head. The difference between the two is that with a head to head league each team is matched up against a different team each week. The team that receives the most points is recorded as the winning team. Teams with the best records at the end of the season play in playoff games at the end of the season in order for a final champion to be determined. With a total points league, wins and losses are not tracked. Instead, points are accumulated on a continual basis. Standings are then determined according to the total points of the teams. At the end of the regular season, the teams with the highest number of total points meet for playoff games.

The auction draft league can also be comprised of either a total points system or a head to head system. Unlike the standard draft league; however, the auction draft league utilizes owners who have an amount of money that is predetermined that they can bid on for players to complete their rosters.

With the dynasty league, players are on the same roster from one season to the next unless they are released or they are traded. Drafts are held for rookies only after the first season.

Keeper leagues combine some of the features between dynasty leagues and standard draft leagues. A draft is held before the beginning of every regular season in order for many of the players to be drafted; however, owners can keep a select number of players from the prior season.

IDP leagues use defensive players in an individual manner rather than in defensive units. This type of league can be a bit harder to organize for the owners because it means more thought will usually need to be given to filling the other positions.

A survivor leagues uses just about any kind of draft you wish; however, they most commonly use auction or standard style drafts. The main difference between this type of league and all of the other leagues is that each week one team is eliminated based on who scores the least number of points.

Title: The Complete Screech Owls (anthology 4 titles)

Exciting Read … Recommended … 4 stars

The Review

The Complete Screech Owls is a four-in-one edition including ‘The Secret of the Deep Woods,’ ‘Murder at the Winter Games,’ ‘Attack on the Tower of London,’ ‘The Screech Owls’s Reunion.’

The reader is carried along on tour with the Screech Owls as they compete world wide. Team captain, Travis Lindsay, is our guide and will let nothing: not terrorism or murder, sabotage, theft, kidnapping, or anything else stand in the way of the team on their quest for acceptance and success. Founders of the team were Muck Munro and Don Dillinger, Muck who came home to Tamarack, Canada when his junior hockey career was stopped short because a badly broken leg did not heal properly, serves as team coach assisted by his able associate Larry ‘Data’ Ulmar. The team has included players Travis Lindsay, Liz Moscovitz, Simon Milliken, Sarah Cuthbertson, Andy Higgins, Gordie Griffith, Derek Dillinger, Fahd Noorizadeh, Jesse Highboy, Dmitri Yakushev, Wayne Nishikawa, Lars Johanssen, Wilson Kelly, Samantha Bennett, Willie Granger, Jenny Staples and Jeremy Weathers may be the best to date.

The Secret of the Deep Woods opens with defensive play Wayne Nishikawa, Nish, wondering if he might be pregnant… his swollen stomach and retching nausea are causing him deep concern. The Screech Owls are on a summer camping/canoe trip in Algonquin Park. Nothing goes quite as they expected.

Murder at the Winter Games opens with Travis who has placed a green jelly bean in his nose. Nish is in charge of the gross out Olympics and things may get a lot worse before they get better. The Screech Owls are now spending a week at summer hockey camp. A body hidden in the boathouse is definitely worse and the Screech Owls are caught up in trying to locate the murderer and solve the mystery.

Attack on the Tower of London opens with Travis passing out cold right in front of the rest of the team. Celebrating Guy Fawkes Day in England may prove to be their undoing. Nish would like to be immortalized in Tussaud’s Chamber of Horrors, after all he is ‘Wayne Nishikawa, the world’s most twisted and evil hockey player. The Screech Owls practice to become top notch as in-line hockey players and find themselves embroiled in another murderous mystery.

The Screech Owls’s Reunion: Travis now teaches high school in Tamarack, Sam has a son, Muck, The Screech Owls are no longer kids, and they no longer play hockey as a team. A decade has passed, the kids are living their own lives. Data runs a computer business with Fahd. Sarah is captain of the women’s Olympic hockey team. Wilson is a police officer. As unbelievable as it may seem; Nish is in Las Vegas, where he is a member the well know group; The Flying Elvises. The team finds itself embroiled in another murderous mystery when they gather for a reunion in Tamarack and learn a gambling casino looms on the horizon.

Writer MacGregor has crafted a long running Canadian series which has garnered many awards and acclaim among young ice hockey readers. Each of the four books included in this compilation is well written, fast paced filled with action and just enough gross to intrigue middle grade readers. The mysteries are integral to the tales, the kids are believable in their behaviors and manners.

I received a soft bound single edition for review, and would like to see some of the single editions. I plan to take this volume to my classroom come fall. I think the work will have appeal for the boys in the class and for many of the girls as well. I am considering separating the four books into individual ones so that four kids at a time can be reading rather than just one. The compilation is ideal for the home library. A must have for the active young reader.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

There’s an age old debate about which sports have the most participants or attract the most spectators. We take a look at some statistics to see if we can find the answers.

Judging from the number of followers of the game, football (soccer) is the most popular sport of all. With more than 3 billion fans worldwide this is the sport that dominates all others.

Estimates suggest that the last football World Cup final was watched live by almost 1 billion people – a quite astonishing figure. In the UK alone there are almost 50,000 registered football clubs, with up to 3 million participants.

Leading football clubs attract attendances of considerably more than 50,000 spectators on a regular basis, with the Spanish heavyweights of Real Madrid and Barcelona often drawing massive crowds.

Football truly is the global game.

Next up in the listings is a sport that might surprise many: cricket. Although cricket seems to have failed to have caught the imagination in large parts of the world (North America, China and South America being examples), participation and viewing figures are extremely high.

These figures are largely boosted by the popularity of the sport in Asia, where India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are all significant cricketing nations.

Elsewhere in the world, England, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies all have international cricket teams, while the sport is growing in some parts of continental Europe (notably the Netherlands and Denmark).

The third most popular sport in the world is harder to judge, with figures conflicting. Some suggest basketball, undoubtedly the American sport with the largest global appeal.

Other leading contenders include tennis, field hockey (once again, a sport that has enormous appeal in the Indian sub-continent) and swimming.

A recent report in the UK suggested that the largest sports, in terms of participants, were walking and fishing. Although walking by not be classed as a sport by many, the inclusion of fishing on such a list may come as a surprise.

Though there is little agreement and such things are difficult to measure, it seems undeniable that football (soccer) remains the world’s most popular sport.

These days, girls can barely open a fashion magazine or turn on the television without being bombarded by images of “super-skinny” and “size zero” celebrities. Reality TV shows would lead us to believe that every girl aspires to be the “Next Top Model”.

A recent university research study found that 50% of 16-year-old girls believe they are too fat and that there is a significant decline in confidence among young girls between the ages of 11 and 16.

Both these stats and shows raise serious concerns about how this “idealized” body image influences girls who want to become the “Next Great Female Hockey Player”?

As young female players reach their mid-teens, the influence of popular culture may lead them to question whether they want to stay involved in a sport that is not only traditionally ‘male’, but also requires them to be physically strong. Players may ask:

“Can I be the best player on the ice and still fit into the “skinny size zero” ideal?”

Players CAN’T have it both ways. The rink is NO runway.

If a player wants to be the next great player, she has to train like one. When an athlete says that she doesn’t want to strength train because she is worried about her legs getting bigger, what she is really saying is that she doesn’t want to play at the highest levels of hockey.

This is a choice that all young female players must make. They must accept the fact that strength training will build muscle. More muscle means more strength. And the best female hockey players in the world are incredibly strong both on and off the ice.

Despite what we see in the fashion magazines and on TV, there aren’t many women who are 5 foot 9 and weigh 100 pounds. And there definitely aren’t any elite female players that fit this “ideal” – the average weight on the Canadian and United States National Team’s is 150 pounds.

The best female players in the world are NOT “skinny size zeroes”, but they epitomize what the true “ideals” of society should be. They are both strong and feminine. This may not make them the ideal runway models, but it does make them terrific role models.

Female hockey players can help to redefine the female ideal.

So is it going to be…

Runway Model or Role Model?

“Next Top Model” or “Next Great Player”?

All types of sports are popular globally, but what sports can we call THE most popular in the world? Some of the answers may surprise you.

It’s no surprise that football, or what Americans call “soccer” is the world’s most popular sport to play and to watch. An estimated 3.5 billion people either watch or play football. The World Cup is the global championship of the sport and this tournament is played every four years. The World Cup itself is one of the highest rated sports on television, with many countries tuning in en masse to watch their country’s team play. Football is popular in all of the UK, Europe, Asia as well as South America. However, with so many other sports being popular, the Unites States still lags behind in their interest in “soccer”.

Next, we have cricket. This sport which consists of a bat and a ball, has been around for hundreds of years and originated in England. The sport is popular in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, some African countries, some Caribbean countries and it is the most popular sport in the countries of India and Pakistan. An estimated 3 billion people watch or play cricket each year.

The next most popular sport is a sure surprise, and that is field hockey, with an estimated 2 billion players or watchers, mostly in Asian countries, European countries, Australia and around Africa. This sport tends to be played in high schools in the United States, usually by girls only.

Coming up next is tennis. Not so surprising, but there are an estimated 1 billion players and watchers of tennis around the world. Tennis tends to be popular in richer countries, including the United States, Asian countries, Australia and Europe. There are four main tournaments in tennis, called “Grand Slams” at which players from many countries play. The first is the Australian Open, then the French Open, Wimbledon and then the US Open in late August. The Grand Slam tournaments tend to get the most attention during the tennis season.

Next we have volleyball. Yet another surprise, with an estimated 900 million viewers or players around the world. Volleyball is popular in the United States, where the sport originated, as well as in Brazil, all over Europe, Russia, China and Japan. Volleyball is a popular high school sport in many countries due to it’s team centered play and lack of specialized equipment requirements.

Also popular is table tennis, otherwise known as Ping Pong. This is another surprisingly popular sport around the world, with an estimated 900 million watchers or players. Table tennis originated in England as an after dinner activity for Victorians in the late 19th century. Table tennis as a competitive sport is popular in many countries but is especially popular in China, Korea and Singapore.

After these sports, we have a triumvirate of more mainstream American sports including baseball, golf, American football and basketball, with each sport attracting between 400 and 500 million players or watchers worldwide.

Let’s face it. There are times when you need some extra space. A little bit more room, preferably a horizontal surface. What to do, what to do?

Let’s say that you’re having your parents over for dinner in your new apartment. It’s the first time you’ve cooked for them (beyond toast and franks and beans when you were 9), and while you’re nervous, you’re kind of excited, too. The problem is that you don’t happen to own a table and chairs.

Since you don’t want dear old mom eating off her lap while balancing on your futon, you need a table-like surface. Looking around, you spot the ideal place. Air hockey tables, while flat, are a bit higher than the normal dining table, but it should do nicely.

Throw on a tablecloth (you can pick up some nice ones pretty cheap at your favorite discount store), draw up some chairs and you’re good to go. I suggest a vinyl tablecloth, as it will be water-proof. You never know if something might spill, forever clogging the air holes on your table!

Another time your air hockey table might double as a place for food and drink is when you might be throwing a party. When it’s time to serve dinner, us a cardboard cover under that handy table cloth and set-up the buffet. Once everyone’s had their fill, you can remove the cover and challenge your friends to a friendly game or two.

Perhaps you’re not much of a cook or party-thrower, but your sister’s boyfriend is in town. While she is fairly certain that he’s “the one”, you may not be so sure. Since it seems that he’s going to bunk with you, you’ll need somewhere to put him. The futon is much too lumpy; and besides your dog sleeps there. What to do, what to do?

Throw a quilt on the good old air hockey table, and you’ve an instant guest bed! With luck, he’ll have a bad back, and truly enjoy the, shall we say, firmness of the table? He’ll be up out of the way, and you’ll be letting him know that while you’re accepting him as your sister’s boyfriend, you by no means are sure of him personally.

Yet another use for your air hockey table might be as a work surface. If you’ve had to bring work home from the office or even from school and need a good wide desk, your air hockey table stands ready to serve. With plenty of room to spread out, you’ll have a good working surface – one that is safe from your dog walking all over!

Need a place to sort your CD collection? Cleaning out a bookshelf or closet? The air hockey table is a perfect temporary resting place for these items. Getting ready to have a garage sale? Store your sale items (temporarily) on your air hockey table. It’s an excellent staging area to price your junk for the sale.

No matter what you need it for, your air hockey table stands ready, willing, and able to help. Who knew it could be so versatile?

One of the most versatile hockey playing countries in the world, Pakistan has won the Gold medal in Olympics thrice starting from 1960. The 1960 Olympics hockey gold medal win is memorable because they defeated the winning streak of India. Since then hockey in Pakistan has evolved and even become larger than life in stature.

Before entering the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, Pakistan had already tasted victory in the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games where they got the gold medal defeating arch rivals India. The 1960 Olympic men’s hockey team had retained the same team barring a few players from the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games winning team. Eight of the players had played in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games final against India and this is where they had also won their first ever Olympic medal.

In the 1960 Olympics, the team players knew that this was probably their last shot at Gold as they were ageing. The 1960 Olympics Pakistan hockey team was led by Abdul Hameed Hameedi who was incidently the lone survivor from the 1948 London Olympics. Hameedi had a strong influence on the team and he had made certain interesting and strategic changes like replacing Zafar Ahmad Khan by Zafar Hayat at the penultimate moment. The manager of the team was Ali Iqtidar Shah (AIS) Dara, who was the coach of the 1956 Olympics squad.

Pakistan started their hunt for gold in the 1960 Olympics in a cavalier fashion and beat the super-strong and fit Australians by 3-0. It was a strong match and Pakistan started scoring only in the last 15 minutes. Poland was next and was pulverized 8-0 while Japan got thrashed by a 10-0 margin. The quarter-final saw Pakistan in a battle of nerves with West Germany and on top of that they missed the services of full-back Munir Dar although substitute Basheer Ahmad did a fine job.

Pakistand opened their score sheet with Abdul Waheed, one of the best centre forwards of all time but Germany equalized within a short span. Finally, the winning goal was netted by Naseer Bunda, the left-in. Pakistan went on to win the semi-final against Spain by a 1 goal margin scored by full-back Manzoor Hussain Atif. Then came the D-Day – the finals!

It was India with their 6 consecutive wins versus Pakistan who was hungry for their first ever win. The green shirts went on with an all-out attack. Through the entire tournament, the main strategy of Pakistan was employing the right trio of Ghulam Rasool Chaudhry, Hameedi and Noor Alam. As the clock ticked away, Hameedi slipped the ball to Noor Alam in the 13th minute. Noor Alam found left-in Naseer Bunda, who flicked the ball onto the left side of the Indian goalkeeper. This was the all important goal as it announced Pakistan’s arrival into the world of hockey!

Pakistan had outclassed, out-spirited and out-sprinted every team that came in its way and scored 25 magnificent goals to etch their name in Olympic history.
